Choosing a retirement residence is about more than amenities, meals, or location. It’s about finding a place where you or your loved one can feel safe, respected, and at home.
While many retirement residences are committed to creating welcoming communities, 2SLGBTQI+ seniors may have unique questions or concerns as they explore their options. Every person’s experience is different, but asking a few thoughtful questions can help you find the right fit.

Ask how the residence supports diversity and inclusion, how they welcome same-sex couples, or how they approach the needs of transgender residents. Open conversations can help everyone feel more confident.
You may not always see rainbow flags or Pride displays, but retirement homes train staff to provide respectful, compassionate care to all residents. Every community expresses inclusion differently. Additionally, staff are trained to understand that queer residents may have unique health needs that are not immediately apparent.
Same-sex couples can absolutely share a suite, just as any other couple would.
Some 2SLGBTQI+ seniors have spent decades advocating for themselves. Others may have experienced discrimination in healthcare or housing and feel uncertain about entering a new community. That’s why sharing your story matters. Let your Eldercare Planner know what makes you feel comfortable, what your priorities are, and whether there are any concerns you would like us to keep in mind as we help you explore your options. We can communicate your preferences to the retirement homes to ensure that your needs are being met.
Many residences encourage residents to help shape community life. If you don’t see an 2SLGBTQI+ social group, educational event, or Pride activity, consider speaking with the recreation manager. You never know who might be looking for those same activities, and new programs often begin because residents share their interests and ideas.
