“I know in my heart I am making a positive difference.”
When you look to someone for advice—especially advice about a major life transition—you want to feel you can trust that expert.
That’s why we like to profile our senior living advisors as much as possible!
Get to know one of our newest advisors, the lovely Kerrie Whitehurst!
Kerrie, why did you join Tea & Toast?
I have enjoyed volunteering with seniors for many years and wanted to explore options for making it my day job and life’s work.
I had heard about Tea & Toast and Amy Friesen’s excellent reputation in the local community, and so I reached out to her to find out how I might be able to contribute. We met, we chatted, and I was hooked!
What did you do before coming to T&T?
I worked in healthcare communications for more than 20 years as a writer/editor. Before that, I had a stint in journalism; and before that, I was fortunate to spend a few awesome years as a full-time mum.
What do you love most about your job?
I meet new people every day; I’m out in the community every day, and every single day is fresh. And it sounds corny, but I truly do love knowing that I am helping people, sometimes at difficult and challenging times in their lives. I know in my heart that I am making a positive difference, and there are simply no words to describe that feeling.
What’s been your favourite T&T moment so far?
I was chatting on the phone with a young woman who was trying to find a place for her dad, who was quite sick and approaching the end of his life. She lived out of town and had lots of questions (understandably), so we were working together to sort out options. Towards the end of our conversation she started crying and told me that Tea & Toast had been more helpful than any other person she had met on the healthcare journey.
Thankfully, we did find a great residence for her father almost right away, and when she and I met in person a few days later, she immediately hugged me close. We didn’t need words—we both understood. I treasure moments like that.
What’s one misconception out there that people have about the retirement retirement industry?
People think that retirement residences are either (a) affordable by only healthy, rich people; or (b) that retirement residences = nursing homes. Neither is true!
What’s one thing most people know you for?
I’ve been told I’m authentic and easy to talk to, which I take as the highest compliment. And I bake a really good Skor-bits cookie!
What’s one thing most people DON’T know about you?
I’m a trained musician and used to sing professionally. I have sung at Canterbury Cathedral in the U.K., on Ottawa’s NAC (National Arts Centre) stage, and even sang back-up for Rosemary Clooney!
